Cutting foam requires precision.
If you make a mistake while cutting, you’ll definitely see it in your project.
To cut properly, you’ll need the following:
- A cutting mat
- A good pair of sharp scissors (use only up to 4 mm)
- A large and small utility knife
- A scalpel
- A metal ruler
(Always cut away from yourself, cut on the cutting mat, and avoid having your fingers or anything else in the direction of the cut)
I generally only use utility knives for cutting large, straight lines.
A scalpel knife is more for precision work.
Place your foam on the cutting mat and press your knife through the foam. Keep the knife as straight as possible while cutting to ensure a clean cut. This is important if you need to glue two pieces together later.
Cut in one motion; if you stop or remove your knife and put it back in the foam, you might get a glitch.
I generally advise against cutting foam. You can get away with 2mm or 4mm if you want to cut small pieces. With thicker foam or large pieces, you also run the risk of creating snags in your cut.
